Michael Pritchard BSc(Hons) FRPS has over twenty years
as a researcher of photographic history and photographic technology,
including over twenty years as a Christie’s photographic specialist. He has
written and lectured extensively and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal
Photographic Society for his work in the history of photography. He can offer a research and advisory service tailored to suit the needs of public and institutional collections and private collections in the United Kingdom, Europe, United States, Japan and Asia, the Middle East and Australasia. Photographic Collections Advice can be given and work undertaken on: • the compilation of a photographic collection, working to a budget or set of pre-defined criteria • the cataloguing and physical organization of a photographic collection • the managed disposal of a photographic collection In this context ‘photographic collection’ refers to collections of historic or collectible photographs, cameras and photographic equipment, photographic books, printed material and ephemera, and related areas such as magic lanterns, lantern slides, optical toys, cinematographic cameras and equipment. Research • Research can be undertaken on objects within a collection for the purpose of exhibition, the production of an online or web-based resource or for a printed catalogue or book • Primary research can be undertaken into specific objects and their surrounding context, for example, the photographer, a manufacturer or location. This might be done using such sources as original photographic literature, trade literature, copyright records, patents and trade marks, genealogical data, trade directories and company records.
